Stunell urges no-proof, no-sale on age restricted purchases

12.00.00am GMT Tue 18th Mar 2003

Local MP Andrew Stunell is calling on the Government to encourage a responsible culture where consumers expect to supply proof of age when purchasing age-restricted products.

Mr Stunell said, "The current situation just isn't good enough. Shop workers are intimidated and often verbally and physically attacked by children wanting to purchase solvents, alcohol and cigarettes. These small shops provide a vital community service in Stockport and the safety of their staff must not be in doubt."

The Association of Convenience Stores has recently launched a campaign to promote a "No Proof, No Sale" message as already exists in the United States.

Commenting on the campaign, Mr Stunell says, "The Government must take the lead by putting its full backing behind this campaign and actively encouraging age-checking on products that are dangerous for kids."
